These masses represent the fragments that are formed from the Long-Chain Base (LCB) portion of the most common Sphingomyelin (SM) and Dihydrosphingomyelin (DSM) molecular species. The Long-Chain Base is combined with a Fatty Amide (FA) chain to form the Ceramide (or Dihydroceramide) backbone of sphingolipids. When a Phosphocholine Head Group is added the Ceramide or Dihydroceramide backbone, the molecules Sphingomyelin or Dihydrosphingomyelin are formed. The structures of the Long-Chain Base, Fatty Amide, Ceramide or Dihydroceramide, and Sphingomyelin or Dihydrosphingomyelin can be seen in the structure schemes listed on the Navigation Menu. |
